Progestins in general help prevent fertilization by preventing a woman's egg from fully developing. In addition, they cause changes at the opening of the uterus that make it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. The Depo-Provera injection is administered in either the woman's buttock or he upper arm. It is repeated four times a year for year-round pregnancy prevention.
