Depo-Provera is a progestin injection. Progestins in general help prevent fertilization by preventing a woman's egg from fully developing. In addition, they cause changes at the opening of the uterus that make it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. The Depo-Provera injection is administered in either the woman's buttock or he upper arm. It is repeated four times a year for year-round pregnancy prevention. Proper Depo-Provera Usage

If it has been longer than 13 weeks since your last injection, your physicain may want you to stop receiving Depo-Provera for a while. You will need to use a different birth control method (such as condoms) until it is determined that you are not pregnant. Depo-Provera's Side Effects
Women who use Depo-Provera may lose significant bone mineral density. The bone loss is greater with increasing duration of use and may not be completely reversible; therefore, Depo-Provera should be used as a long-term birth control method (e.g. longer than two years) only if other birth control methods are inadequate. Depo-Provera has been determined to be 99.7% effective in preventing conception. Progestins do not protect a woman from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
